Workshop 1: Tech, Culture and Ethics

Time: 21 June 2022, 9.00 – 10.30 (London, BST) / 17.00 – 18.30 (Seoul, KST)

Description: In a post-pandemic society, digital has become the default. Digital transformation of museums has been accelerated in various ways, from the digitisation of collections to the development of virtual exhibitions in the metaverse. However, it is undeniable that technologies are not neutral. Digital methods do not work for all. Workshop 1 explores how we can better understand the relationship between technology, culture, and ethics, and reflect this relationship in museum practices in order to ensure digital audiences feel welcomed. This workshop identifies key theoretical and ethical issues relevant in the two countries and which underpin this project.

In particular, workshop 1 addresses questions such as:  How can museums proactive to promote digital inclusion? What types of investment in digital skills and competences is needed to achieve digital inclusion? What type of collaborations are needed to improve museums’ capabilities in relation to inclusive digital provision and digital ethics/accountability? This workshop will help improve our understandings on the digital transformation of museums from technical, cultural, social, and ethical perspectives.
